Building in Palo Alto

Every city in our area is its own jurisdiction with its own review process. What's true in one does not carry across the city line — which is why this page exists rather than a single generic service-area page.

Palo Alto has its own utilities department and a review process with a reputation for being thorough. Older neighborhoods also carry tree protections that can affect where a foundation or an ADU can physically go — worth checking before design, not after.

We work throughout Palo Alto — whether you're in Old Palo Alto, Crescent Park, Midtown, Barron Park, or College Terrace, the build is the same standard.

Permits. Work in Palo Alto is permitted through the City of Palo Alto Development Services Department (Building Division). We carry the submittal and the plan-check corrections — that is our job, not yours.

Budget

What projects cost in Palo Alto

Published ranges, not a bait number. Bay Area construction runs above the national average and we would rather you see that now than after a site visit. Every project is quoted custom — these are the brackets we actually work in.

Project typeTypical range
New ConstructionFrom $500/sq ftGround-up, plus site work and soft costs.
ADUs$300K–$360K for a good-quality buildPriced per project, not per square foot — roughly $13.5K–$18.5K of plans, survey and soils work is fixed no matter how small the unit is. Size, site conditions and finish level move it from there.
Home Additions$130K–$490KBy square footage added and how much structure has to change.
Whole-Home Remodels$130K–$490KA true to-the-studs rebuild is priced like new construction, not like a remodel.
Kitchen Remodeling$24K–$45K typical$65K–$120K+ for high-end work — that is the top of the market, not the middle of it.
Bathroom Remodeling$22K–$30K typical$20K is our floor. To the studs and waterproofed properly — we do not bid the $10K version.

Our minimum project size is $20,000. Site conditions, utilities and structural findings move these numbers more than finishes do.

Common Questions

Straight answers

Do you build in Palo Alto?
Yes. Palo Alto is inside our service area — we build across Santa Clara County and keep a deliberately tight radius so travel time doesn't come out of your project.
Do you handle the Palo Alto permit process?
Yes. We carry the submittal and the plan-check corrections. Requirements and review times differ from city to city, and Palo Alto is its own jurisdiction with its own process — chasing that is our job, not yours.
Are you licensed, bonded and insured?
Yes — California General Building (B) license #1112902, a $25,000 contractor bond, and an active workers' compensation policy with The Hartford. Verify the license on the CSLB registry.
Do you handle the design?
We build your vision — we're not designing the place with you. If you already have plans, we price and build from them. If you need real design work, you need a designer, and we'll say so up front.
Do you do roofing?
No. We hold a General B license, not a C-39 roofing license. When a project needs roof work we bring in a licensed roofer and sequence them before interior finish.
What size projects do you take on?
Our minimum is $20,000, and most projects run between $20,000 and $350,000+.
